App to test your phone’s waterproof seals

Now you have an App to test your phone’s waterproof seals. The Water Resistance Tester app uses your phone’s barometer to check the integrity of its waterproof sealing. The app is perfect for devices with IP67/IP68 ratings. Just download the free app, follow the prompts to press down firmly on the screen, and you’ll get a swift pass/fail grade.

Developer Ray Wang says he created the app to help people check the state of their devices’ waterproof sealing after a repair or as it degrades over time. Water Resistance Tester gives you a pretty good idea of how your phone will perform but dip it in your pool at your own expense.

It also has not been designed for older phones with a different style of waterproofing. And may not work accurately if your phone is from the starting days of IP67 rating.

A user tested the app and commented “at least in the 4 test cases I tried. Xperia 5 II (IP68, intact) – waterproof(not waterproof if sim tray is removed); Xperia XZ (IP68, corner busted open, screen replaced) – not waterproof; Galaxy S4 Mini (no IP rating) – not waterproof”.

The way the app works is it measures the internal pressure. Then asks to push on your phone, if your phone is still sealed the pressure will increase. The new app seems to work well. And it’s free unless you want to tip the developer $1 to remove a small ad at the bottom of the screen.
